I AM...

I am currently a 5th year student at the University of British Columbia (UBC).

I am still not sure why I chose to major in Computer Science but growing up around computers and having a sister major in CS definitely influenced me. One of my favourite games when I was young was playing Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on my Sega Genesis. I remember the good old days when I would spent hours on debug mode and place random monsters everywhere. While I no longer do that, I still enjoy creating or building software, websites and breaking them. After taking a few CS courses at UBC, I decided to major in CS.

Having completed a few internships in the lower mainland of Vancouver, my general interests are in Software and Web Development. While this is quite broad, I really enjoy getting to try different types of technologies. While I have spent a lot of time developing in Java, these days, I find myself using more of Python with the Django framework for web development. I've also used C++, PHP and love advancing my skills with Javascript, HTML5 and CSS.

While school is keeping me busy, I emphasize to keep up with my other hobbies. During spring, I compete on the UBC Women's Ultimate team. With this team, we travel to various tournaments on weekends in Canada and the US. With 3 practices a week, workouts on our own and tournaments, on selected weekends, I've learned to work efficiency and organize my time wisely. During Summer, you might see me on the field in VUL or a club touring team!

I support highly of women in Computer Science! At school, I've been on the Focus on Women in Computer Science (FoWCS) commitee and enter majority of the events that it hosts. This past fall, I was lucky enough to learn from and meet many other techical women through the Grace Hopper conference in Portland. Attending Grace Hopper was definitely one of the best CS experiences I had as an undergrad.

What am I up to right now? I am back at UBC after having spent a study abroad term at the University of Birmingham in Birmingham, England. I developed an interest in Computer Security after taking 2 modules in Computer Security and Cryptography during my time there. This upcoming summer, I'll be a Software Development Engineer intern at Amazon.

During this spring term, I am also playing on the UBC Women's Ultimate team. While I work hard at school, it is nice to have another activity that keeps me busy away from school. Our team hopes to return to the USA Ultimate College Championships this year!

If you want to talk to me about something, please feel free to email me at crystal.koo@gmail.com. I hope to hear from you!
